February 2012

Bioinformatics study findings could lead to screening test for safely taking medications: Columbia University College of Dental Medicine researchers have identified a genetic variation that raises the risk of developing serious necrotic jaw bone lesions in patients who take bisphosphonates. The discovery paves the way for a genetic screening test to determine who can safely take these drugs. The author believes that one day we will be able to use genomic data in the dental clinic to improve dental care. They are working towards the concept of personalized medicine's full implementation in Dentistry. Read more.

The Virtual World Congress of Dental Students, May 9-11, 2012: This project gives every dental student a chance to present a scientific paper to colleagues and teachers and be awarded. The goal is to encourage students to take part in research activities or conduct their own research projects, to increase communication and collaboration among dental schools. Find out more.

New Blog on the DIOC: The DIOC has created a Blog on data, computing and technology in dentistry. The first blog entry explains what the blog is about, and is looking for topics from DIOC members. We plan to post on the blog about 2-3 times a month.

Association of American Medical Colleges Call for Information Technology Submissions: The 2012 Information Technology in Academic Medicine Conference, being sponsored by the AAMC Group on Information Resources (GIR), will focus on how technology is and can assist in organizational change, improving processes and supporting collaborative efforts in medical education, research, and clinical service. Conference is June 4-6, 2012. ADEA members and other health professionals are welcome. Get more information.

Postdoctoral Associate Position at the Center for Dental Informatics: The postdoctoral associate will play a key role in two NIH-funded research projects that aim to improve the management of electronic patient data in dentistry and to facilitate their reuse for research.
